Finding the Right Horse Riding Holiday for You

Choosing the Right Horse Riding Holiday for Your Riding Level

Finding the right horse riding holiday is about more than choosing a destination. You also want to make sure the riding is suited to your experience, confidence and fitness in the saddle. Whether you have been riding since you could walk or are relatively new to the sport, there are brilliant options for every level. From relaxed centre-based holidays and scenic trail rides to dressage, cross country and faster-paced riding adventures, there is plenty to choose from.

We always like to have a chat with you before recommending a holiday. It gives us the chance to find out a bit more about your riding experience, the type of riding you enjoy and what you kind of riding holiday you’ve been dreaming of. The more honest you are about your ability, the easier it is for us to find the right match.

The important thing is finding a holiday that feels right for you. You want to come home feeling like you have had an adventure, not like you have spent the week trying to keep up or holding everyone else back. Below, we have outlined each riding level to help you work out where you fit. And if you are still not sure, don’t worry. That’s exactly what we’re here for.

How We Define Riding Levels

We group riders into four riding levels to help match you with the right holiday: Novice, Intermediate, Intermediate Plus and Advanced. Your riding level is not simply about how many years you have been riding. We also look at how regularly you ride, your current riding fitness, how confident and balanced you are in the saddle, and how comfortable you are riding different horses and in different environments.

If you are a novice or intermediate rider, there are plenty of holidays where you can relax, build your confidence and enjoy being in the saddle without feeling out of your depth. This could mean shorter riding days, gentler terrain, smaller groups or the opportunity to have lessons alongside your riding. You might be hacking through vineyards in Tuscany, riding along the coast in Andalusia or enjoying a relaxed stay at a riding centre in the UK.

More experienced riders have a wider range of options, including faster-paced trail rides, challenging terrain, dressage holidays, cross country escapes and long days in the saddle. These holidays often require a good level of riding fitness, balance and confidence, particularly when riding forward-going horses over uneven ground, through water or across open countryside.

Many of our horse riding holidays are also ideal for mixed groups. You might be travelling with riders of different abilities, or with a partner, friend or family member who does not ride at all. Some holidays can cater for different riding levels within the same group, while others combine riding with plenty of other activities, so everyone can enjoy the trip in their own way.

Novice

It is always helpful to have some riding experience, but several of our beginner-friendly horse riding holidays welcome complete novices. You may still be learning how to communicate clearly with a horse using your aids and will generally be limited to walking and trotting, or have a few introductory lessons before heading out on longer rides. Novice riders are best suited to relaxed holidays with well-trained horses, shorter riding sessions and plenty of support to help build confidence in the saddle. Intermediate

Intermediate riders typically have some riding experience, whether from regular lessons over time or a number of shorter rides and riding holidays. You will have a working knowledge of the basic aids, including how to ask a horse to move forward, turn and stop, along with some experience trotting and cantering on well-trained horses, although your balance, confidence and contact may still be developing. Because of this, intermediate riders are generally best suited to centre-based or lodge-based holidays, shorter trail rides and relaxed riding adventures, rather than long, demanding days across challenging or remote terrain.

Intermediate Plus

Intermediate Plus riders have been riding for several years and are well balanced in the saddle. You ride reasonably regularly and are riding fit, with an independent seat and soft hands that allow you to adapt comfortably to different horses. You are confident riding a sensible but fit and forward-going horse at all paces, both in an arena and out on the open trail, and can react calmly to varied terrain and changing situations. Because of this, Intermediate Plus riders are well suited to longer riding days, faster-paced holidays and more varied or challenging terrain.

Advanced

You are considered an advanced rider if you have extensive riding experience, ride regularly and are confident and well balanced on a variety of horses. You are riding fit and comfortable outdoors at all paces, including on fit, responsive and forward-going horses. You can adapt your riding style easily, react quickly when needed and are happy jumping obstacles or riding across more technical terrain. Because of this, advanced riders are well suited to fast-paced and adventurous horse riding holidays, including long days in the saddle, challenging terrain and journeys where confidence, stamina and the ability to ride independently are essential.

Combines with Non-Riders

Many of our favourite horse riding holidays are perfect for mixed groups, so there is no need to compromise if not everyone in your group rides. Some holidays can cater for riders of different abilities, while others combine riding with plenty to do beyond the saddle, from hiking and wildlife experiences to wine tasting, spa treatments and cultural visits. This means riders and non-riders can happily enjoy the same holiday, whether one person spends the morning exploring on horseback while others head out on foot, or riders tackle a challenging trail while everyone meets up later to share the day’s adventures.
